Scope and content

Correspondence and papers concerning the [abandoned] proposal to print an edition of The Observer in Manchester. The bulk of the correspondence dates from the years 1959-1960.

File includes correspondence with Francis Mathew of the Times, on print charging; with the Society of Lithographic Artists, Designers, Engravers and Process Workers, the National Union of Press Telegraphists, the National Society of Electrotypers and Stereotypers, The National Society of Operative Printers and Assistants, the National Union of Journalists, and the Typographical Association on the same; with JE Berridge, David Holt, Francis Mathew and Tristan Jones, all of The Observer, on the firming up of specific requirements; copies of cost estimates and summaries, and a quotation.

Also included are copies of minutes, on meetings held amongst Guardian staff, with staff of The Observer, and with trade unions, concerning the proposal. Issues raised include suggested basis of charging for the project, printing capacity at 3 Cross Street, Manchester, and rent charges. Guardian staff consulted include Kenneth Searle, Horace Milner, WJ Lascelles and JH McKelvie.
