Scope and content

The advertisement featuring Peter Mandelson's quote was never used. It had been planned to follow the Murdoch advertisment (see GUA/12/6/5) but the Labour MP for Hartlepool resigned from Government in late 1998 following a Guardian investigation into an undeclared loan. Guardian marketing manager Karen Byrne said, "We felt at the time that the Guardian had done its job of work and to coninue with the advertising would be too crowding".
