Letter from home

Part of Cartoons by David Low

Embedded text reads: Dear Anthony, We are all well at home except that the old cow died in the explosion which broke Grandpa's leg and burned the house down, but that was put out by the flood which carried away the front garden. Meantime the central heating has packed up, the second glacial period is coming and we have the brokers-men in. Hoping this finds you as it leaves us at present. Your loving playmates.

Depicts Anthony Eden lying on the beach in sunshine while Harold Macmillan and Winston Churchill sit wrapped up in blankets by the ruins of a house.

Low; Sir; David Alexander Cecil (1891-1963); political cartoonist

The son of Edward Taylor Scott and grandson of Charles Prestwich Scott, both former editors of the Guardian newspaper. Educated at Gresham School, Norfolk and Christ’s College, Cambridge. After leaving school he began his career with the Legal Nations Union in London, writing brochures, pamphlets and memoranda for members. Following this he spent a year working for The Spectator before working for the British Council and the Foreign Office in the news department.

He first contributed to the Guardian in 1947. As diplomatic correspondent Richard Scott was involved in the Guardian’s reporting of the Suez crisis. He moved to America, as Washington correspondent, in 1963.
