Photographic prints of Denis Thorpe's work from 1950 including photographs taken in a personal capacity, and work produced for the Daily Mail (1957-74) and the Guardian (1974-96). Also includes examples of Denis's freelance work for the Guardian, 1996-2000.

Administrative/Biographical history: Denis Thorpe initially aspired to become a reporter having been praised for some of his writing whilst at school. He joined the Mansfield Reporter as junior journalist in 1948, his job responsibilities mostly assisting the photographer. After National Service he rejoined the Mansfield Reporter as photographer. He then worked for the Northampton Chronicle & Echo (1954-55), the Lincolnshire Echo (1955), Birmingham Gazette & Dispatch (1955-57) before joining the Daily Mail in 1957. He joined the Guardian on the 12 August 1974, where he stayed for over 22 years. The Guardian encouraged his work and allowed him to explore new methods and to become adept in all genres of photography. Thorpe retired in April 1996 but continues to take photographs and give talks. An exhibition of photographs from his book 'Photographs 1950-2000' was displayed in the Guardian Newsroom from the 7 May-25 June 2004.

Glass plate negatives, lantern slides and prints for photographs taken by Walter Doughty during the first 24 years of his Manchester Guardian career.

Administrative/Biographical history: Walter Doughty was born on the 22 August 1876 in Stalybridge. Doughty joined the Manchester Guardian in 1908 as the paper's first staff photographer and continued to work occasionally for the paper and the Manchester Evening News after his retirement in 1949. He was an innovative photojournalist; he was the first newspaperman to photograph the city of Manchester from the air in 1919 when the Manchester Corporation opened its first municipal aerodrome. It is also believed he covered the civil war in Ireland for the paper in 1922 with a camera he either made himself, or had custom built for his use. Part of his obituary from The Guardian, 29 May 1958, reads 'In the files of the office his pictures throughout the Edwardian and Georgian eras would make a fine illustrated history of the North of England from the last 50 years', making him the first in a strong line of Manchester-based Guardian photographers who would continue in this tradition, amongst them Tom Stuttard, Robert Smithies, Don McPhee and Denis Thorpe. He died at his Alderley Edge home on 27 March 1958.
