Margaret Thatcher is shown aboard a ship in an old navy uniform, singing "... I polished up Trident so carefullee, That now I am the Seller of the Queen's navy!" Behind her, looking uncomfortable is Geoffrey Howe. Steering the vessel is Keith Joseph. Standing to attention are other members of Thatcher's cabinet, including William Whitelaw and John Nott. In the background an aircraft-carrier is sailing away with 'INVINCIBLE' written on the back and flying the Australian flag.
Gibbard; Leslie David (1945-2010); cartoonistWilliam Whitelaw, Margaret Thatcher, and Michael Heseltine sit on the front bench in the House of Commons. Whitelaw looks concerned and Heseltine angry. Geoffrey Howe stands reading a speech. Ronald Reagan waves at the MPs as he walks towards Howe. The head of the House of Commons mace is labeled 'Jelly beans' and has them inside it in reference to Reagan's habit of eating them.
Context: Reagan was invited to address a joint meeting of the House of Commons and Lords. This information was leaked to the news before Thatcher talked to the opposition, causing Labour to seriously consider boycotting such a visit. (Source: The Guardian 9 March 1982 via Proquest)

This cartoon is set on a beach with two boats racing towards a bunch of fish in the water, representing potential voters. Labour are portrayed as a marooned ship on the shore and the Conservatives are the boat racing towards the fish on the water. Both boats have numerous people on board with fishing reels. The Conservative boat contains figures such as Margaret Thatcher, William Whitelaw and Michael Heseltine. The Labour boat has two figures stood outside, Michael Foot and Denis Healey. Michael Foot is looking at the tide tables and Denis Healey has the fishing bait.

Context: Callaghan's government narrowly won a vote on its economic policy and spending cuts by just 13 votes. (Source: The Guardian 12 October 1976 via Proquest).
