Reminiscences by Brian Jones
MEM/BJO · File · May 2001
Part of Guardian & Observer staff memoirs

Memoir written by Brian Jones in which he provides an account of his job interviews in Manchester, first at the Telegraph and then at the Manchester Guardian; appointment as a sub-editor for the Guardian in 1959; his return to the paper in the early 1970s as Northern Editor; the staffing impact of the closure of the News Chronicle in 1960 and subsequent influx of new Guardian staff and his time at Bristol Evening Post and work with ex-News Chronicle reporter Norman Crossland.

Administrative/Biographical history: Joined the Guardian in 1959 and in 1961 he was one of a small number of subeditors who came to London from Manchester to help launch the London print editions of the paper. He left to become editor of the Bath and Wiltshire Evening Chronicle but rejoined the Guardian in 1968 as Production Editor and Assistant Editor. He was responsible for all aspects of the paper's production at night and worked in parallel to John Cole (assistant editor and news editor). Appointed Northern Editor, c January 1973 and became deputy editor in 1975. Retired in 1978. Director of the Guardian Foundation, 1993-98.
