A D'Oyly Carte Farewell
LDG/1/29/3 · Item · 21 June 1982
Part of Illustrations by Les Gibbard

Margaret Thatcher is shown aboard a ship in an old navy uniform, singing "... I polished up Trident so carefullee, That now I am the Seller of the Queen's navy!" Behind her, looking uncomfortable is Geoffrey Howe. Steering the vessel is Keith Joseph. Standing to attention are other members of Thatcher's cabinet, including William Whitelaw and John Nott. In the background an aircraft-carrier is sailing away with 'INVINCIBLE' written on the back and flying the Australian flag.

A Geoffrey 'Howetzer' fires 'Interest Rates', with 'Industry' clinging on, into the 'I.O.U. sphere', with 'Export Markets' in the distance. Keith Joseph stands by. However, an outline of its trajectory shows a steep fall back to Earth - Thatcher is denying that this represents a U-turn.

Context: Howe's budget was expected to mark a significant increase in taxation, and thus deflation. This shocked many Tory MPs and even ministers, at a time of a retracting economy and increasing unemployment.

Keith Joseph is stood on the gallows next to the lever. The top of the apparatus reads 'REGIONAL AID'. Three [MPs] rush towards him, with one holding a piece of paper that reads 'CBI Repreive'. Joseph, having already pushed down the lever, responds "Oh, very well - let's hear the defence then..." Margaret Thatcher watches on in delight, applauding the punishment being carried out.

Magaret Thatcher is depicted as a director, standing in front of a cinema, "THE ASSTORYA',' that appears to be showing adult films. The sign on the venue reads 'Thatcher's (Formerly Friedman's) MAGGIEGULA - The Decline and Fall of Industrial Britain; Disowned By Many of its Leading Men' To her left are [Keith Joseph] selling snacks and Geoffrey Howe selling tickets. To her right are a group of opposition MPs including David Steel, Michael Foot, David Owen and Dennis Healy queueing for the show. Above them seems to be a man [Jim Prior] changing the film for the screening. Other signs on the building read 'An Orgy of Redundancies! Rape! Cut & Thrust', 'Lusty Lunacy! Sadism in the Social Services!' and '"Not the way I would have handled it" - Dirty Mac'

'Electoral Forest'

Keith Joseph, Margaret Thatcher and Geoffrey Howe are joyfully strolling through the 'Electoral Forest' with two others following behind. The forest seems to have been destroyed by an abandoned 'Economic Policy' fire, stoking the flames of 'Unemployment', 'Inflation' and 'Industrial Decline'.

Part of Illustrations by Les Gibbard

Depicts a mountain labelled as 'Higher education' with a group of graduates on bicycles on top of it. They are waiting to go ride and jump off the mountain slope. The slope is labelled 'Spending Cuts.' One graduate, labelled 'Academic Careers,' rides off the slope looking worried. Another graduate, labelled 'Research' falls off his bicycle. At the bottom of the slope are a pile of people and crushed bicycles labelled 'The Nation's Long-Term Future'. A sign at the bottom reads 'Prepare to meet thy Don.' At the side of the mountain Keith Joseph shouts "Next competitor - on your bike!" Beside him at a table labelled 'Monetarist Sports Judges' are Margaret Thatcher and Geoffrey Howe, not really paying attention. On the far left is Michael Foot as a rescue dog with a barrel of brandy around his neck looking worried.

[This may refer to the spending cuts imposed on the education system, especially universities].
