Bown; Jane Hope (1925-2014); photographerAlso Mr John Brislane injury in explosion and Brenda Trainer inured in explosion.
Saunders; Kenneth; photographerAnthony Barber is jumping from a beanstalk and escaping from a giant, who has a paper with "Giant wage claims" written on it. Edward Heath stands below wearing an apron and beside him is the base of the bean stalk and an axe. The bean has "Stand on your own feet" written across it and the axe also has "Freeze" written on it. [The cartoon is based on Anthony Barber's budget and the Conservative u-turn on economic policy in the 1970s, due to high inflation and the wage demands of the public sector.]
There is a rough sketch of another cartoon on the reverse side. The cartoon is titled "Psst - do you think we should try another song?" and shows Edward Heath and Anthony Barber sitting before a giant snake that is emerging from a container that has "Wage claims" written on it. Anthony Barber is playing a trumpet with a music sheet attached, titled "Down boy, down (please)". This cartoon was perhaps an unused alternative to the "Barber and the beanstalk" image.
Gibbard; Leslie David (1945-2010); cartoonistAn obese John Bull figure relaxes in a bath, wearing a Union Jack top hat and burning a pound note with his cigar. The bath is labelled "Employment" and his bulging belly says "Inflation". The bath is full of little people, who are being displaced (along the Archimedes Principle) by John Bull and his growing inflation, and being washed over the sides in all directions and eventually down the drain.
[Anthony Barber was appointed Chancellor of the Exchequer by Edward Heath in 1970, and oversaw a major liberalisation of the banking system, tax reforms, and also relaxed exchange controls. During his term the economy suffered due to stagflation and industrial unrest. In 1972 he delivered a budget which was designed to return the Conservatives to power in an election expected in 1974 or 1975, which led to a period known as "The Barber Boom". The measures in the budget led to high inflation and wage demands from public sector workers. He was forced to introduce anti-inflation measures, along with a Prices Commission and a Pay Board. After the Conservatives lost the first election in 1974, he did not stand in the second election of that year. - Source: Wikipedia]
