Served in the Royal Navy, 1943-1946; on the editorial staff of Daily Sketch and Daily Express, 1946-1949; joined the Daily Mail in 1949 and was chief sub-editor, 1963-1966; founded Gemini News Service, 1967, editor from 1967-1993 and chair, consultant editor and contributor, 1993-2002; president, Diplomatic and Commonwealth Writers' Association of Great Britian, 1972-1974.
