Background information : The National Union of Teachers was in conflict with the Burnham Committee over pay negotiations. By 5 March The National Union of Teachers gave overwhelming support to the new salary settlement giving all teachers an interim award of £120, the deal drawn up by the Burnham Committee. Teachers who had been called out on indefinite strike in Birmingham, Waltham Forest and Southwark were instructed to return to work. (source: The University of Kent, British Cartoon Archive)
