Scope and content
Written memoir of Alan Road's time at the Observer from the 1950s to the 1980s.
Hired in 1969 as a sub-editor on the colour magazine, he describes the Observer as a "writer's paper". Became what he calls a "utility player", or an "all-rounder". Sporadic contributions to the sports desk. He was also the first editor of the Young Observer. Avoided executive posts. Describes his greatest scoop as an exclusive on the discovery of the Titanic wreck.
Administrative/Biographical history: Alan Road began contributing to the Observer in 1959 as a freelance Welsh correspondent. He made the front pages covering the Aberfan disaster and subsequent royal visit. He also worked for the new colour magazine at its launch in 1964.
