Scope and content

This first volume, covering 1908-1929, contains clippings informing readers of new devices, household tips and correspondence with editors of these papers. Original photographs of a cross stitch pattern (1908) and of nurses from the Military Hopsital in Ciltheroe used for an article written for 'The Nursing Times' (1916) are also included.

There are some comments made on the north-south divide including a piece for 'The Lady's Companion (1911) suggesting that wages are higher in the north for maids; from The Manchester Courier (1912) arguing that there is a social and commercial difference between the two and that those from the north laughs at the 'Southern conception of Northern character'.

Included is a loose essay entitled 'In Defence of Women' (1912) intended for the Lady's Companion although it is unclear whether this was published or not. She argues that the present generation of young women work far harder than previous ones, and shows clear dismay at the 'ridiculously low wages' their grandmothers would have paid their servants and laundresses.

Spackman shows empathy for disabled people. In 'The Queen: The Lady's Newspaper' (1912) she argues that the world would be a 'strangely different place today had it not been for the physically ill' giving the example of Corpernicus paralysed on his death bed when he gave 'De Revolutionibus Orbium' to the world; and in 'The Times' (1914), advice on preparing food for them.

There is a folder at the back of the volume including loose papers relating to the fundraising efforts in Clitheroe, Lancashire for prisoners of war during WWI (1918) and includes an article which has a photograph of Spackman and others on the committee.

There is a rough chronological order throughout the volume but clippings are grouped by the newspaper written for.
