He explains how he started writing for the Guardian after suggesting that he write reviews of the Cambridge Festival Threatre for the newspaper, his time working for the BBC as a film critic and working for the Times. Cooke mentions his marriage to his wife, Jane, who was a war widow.
Cooke goes on to discuss his work for the Guardian as a Washington correspondent, remembering working with Max Freedman. He remembers covering the boxing match between Sugar Ray Robinson and Randolph Turpin, and the September 1951 Japanese Peace Treaty Conference. Rushbridger asks how much the Manchester Guardian mattered to American political life.
