Scope and content

Written mostly in Pitman shorthand with some longhand, containing Clyde Sanger's notes during his time as Africa correspondent for the Guardian (1960-1965). They largely relate to countries in Eastern and Southern Africa and contain Clyde's notes from interviews and conferences, as well as observations and research for his articles and books. Subjects covered include politics, the economy, land reforms, rebellions and meetings of nationalist leaders at a time when many former colonies gained independence. The series also includes notebooks containing lists of Clyde's expenses.
